Week 2

Lesson 2 - Explore printing with found objects

Key knowledge to share with your child.

  • Artists try out different ideas in their sketchbooks to see which ideas they like best.
  • Artists often experiment with different colours, patterns and shapes before deciding on their favourite design.

Interesting facts about postage stamps

  • When the first postage stamps were made they tried out different coloured inks to see which would work best (see photo below).
  • They also stamped the design on different coloured papers to check that it would show up on different envelopes.
  • The first stamps were printed in black and the mark to show they had been used was red.

  • People were worried people would try to wash off the cancellation marks and reuse the stamps.
  • They carried out 'Rainbow Trials'. This was an experiment they did. They printed the stamp in many different colours to see which ink couldn't be washed off easily.

  • They changed the stamp to red and the cancellation mark changed to black so it could not be washed off.

Activity 1 - Find your own objects and print with them using different colours on plain paper or the worksheet below.

If you do not have paint, you could do crayon rubbings of the same object in lots of different colours or you could draw the same thing lots of times and colour it in different ways.
