*Art (Tuesday)

Week 1

What am I learning to do?

  • to use drawing to develop and share my ideas, experiences and imagination.
  • to develop a wide range of art and design techniques in using colour, pattern, texture, line, shape, form and space

  • recognise that artists create work to illustrate books and stories and other media and use their drawings to share their thoughts,  ideas, experiences and imagination with others.

Lesson 1 - Drawing is fun

Read the story below. It has the same author as 'The Jolly Postman'.

It is all about the endless possibilities there are to be found when you take one little pencil or paintbrush for a walk across your paper.

Drawings and pictures are used for so many different things in our lives. We see them:

  • in story books
  • on the walls of our homes and towns
  • on wallpaper
  • on magazines, newspapers and on letters
  • on our clothing
  • on transport and signs.

Artwork is useful for many reasons.

  • Artwork can help us to remember important or significant people and events.
  • Artwork is used to decorate things.
  • Artwork also helps us to understand things or remember things better.
  • Artwork can help us to communicate feelings.

What will we be focussing on this Term?

This Term we are going to start by looking at the tiny pieces of Art. We are going to look at postage stamps.

The Pencil - By Allan Ahlberg and Bruce Ingman

Activity 1 - Find small items and draw them.

Collect a selection of objects that are all smaller than a postage stamp.

Watch the activity below and then have a go at drawing them.

We would love to see your work.

Week 2

Lesson 1 - What is a stamp?

Interesting Facts about Stamps

  • Postage stamps are pieces of paper, with glue or adhesive on the back.
  • They are put on the corner of an envelope to pay the fee for having the postal service take the envelope to where it is being sent.
  • They usually say how much it costs in the corner.
  • The UK were the first to print sheets with perforations (lines of small holes) in between each stamp so they could be separated or ripped neatly into individual stamps. You may have noticed the bumpy edge.
  • There are a lot of different postage stamps in the world.
  • Most countries have their own stamps.
  • Many countries put the name of the country on the stamp.
  • The UK don't put the name of the country on the stamp.
  • The UK put the head the reining monarch on the stamp (the current king or queen)
  • At Christmas the post office sells Christmas Stamps and these have other exciting designs on them. In the past they have had nativity characters, Wallace and Grommit and even the Jolly Postman! (See the photos below.)
  • People collect them in books called stamp albums.
  • Sometimes people collect stamps on a theme. e.g. all from one country, or there is something else that links the stamps. They might collect stamps from a place they went on holiday, or stamps that link to something they like such as birds, aeroplanes, flowers, butterflies or a hobby such as football, tennis, cycling or horse riding.

Activity 1 - Look at stamps on mail in your house or use the ones in the PowerPoint below.

Look at the letters you receive at home. Some will have a stamp on them. The stamp shows the amount of postage that has been paid, and the country the stamp came from. Many stamps are bright and colourful – they have an exciting story to tell.
