Monster Phonics

Monster phonics Daily session

We start the lesson by reviewing the sound and tricky words the children have learnt the day before.

Reading: We then introduce today’s sound and read together many words with this sound in, practising blending.

Writing: We then choose a couple of words which the children have already read and ask them to sound out and write the words from memory using the strategy of “say the sounds, peel your fingers, and write it down”.

The children then listen to the monster phonics video that accompanies the sound of the day.

This ends the carpet session. Half of the children will then complete a phonics activity related to the sound of the day. The other half of the children will read with the teacher or TA.

Phonics reading session

A teacher and TA each have 6 children in their reading group. All children work in pairs. The group all work on the same book. The adult introduces the title and the sound which the book is focused on.

One child has a lolly pop stick and is the “teacher”, the other child is the reader. They begin by reading 4 tricky words, and decodable words containing the focus sound. This is guided by the adult. They then take it in turns to read a page each. The adult listens in to the readers and helps when needed.

The children read the book in their groups, with an adult 3 times a week. Comprehension questions are asked by an adult on the third read.

A sticker is then put in the child’s reading diary to let their adult at home know that they have read three times and they can then access that book online at home. This will support with developing fluency.

Monster Phonics ebooks

Parents and carers can now gain access to Monster Phonics ebooks.  These books are a fabulous addition to our home/school reading books.   The national curriculum now states that children must have access to phonically decodable books containing just the sounds the individual child knows.  These books link directly to your child's phonic skills and the order the sounds are taught in the Monster Phonics scheme.

Monster Phonics Teaching Phrases

My go, your go

Blending for reading

Blend the sounds, read the word.

Point to each sound as you say it then draw a line L to R under the word as you blend the sounds.  Point to the sounds when the children are reading and draw the line.

Segmenting for spelling

Say the sounds, peel your fingers, write it down.

Say each sound in the word, peel a finger to each sound you say, write it down (don’t say the word as a whole once you’ve segmented it.)
