Week 1 - England 

Over the term we will be learning which sports are popular in the different countries in the UK. 

 

What will we be learning?

  • to master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities

  • to stay safe in the water. 

  • basic skills that will help to improve your proficiency and competency in swimming and swimming when you begin lessons in Y2. 

     

Lesson 1 - What sports is England known for?

Please find below a selection of sport activities your child can choose from which all link to the country we are studying this week.

  • Cricket

  • Football/ Soccer

  • Basketball/Netball

  • Swimming

  • Tennis

  • Table Tennis/Ping Pong 

  • Fishing

  • Darts

  • Rowing

 

Some activities are short, some are long. Some will suit those of you who are working in a small space at home and some will suit those of you who will be keen to get out into the garden. We hope that there is something to suit every taste, ability and situation. 

 

 

Learn about the famous English sport - Cricket

  • England's national sport is cricket. 
  • Cricket is often played on Sundays on village greens and in towns and cities. 
  • Players hit a ball with a long paddle bat. 
  • The batter stands in front of a wicket which has 3 long wooden sticks called stumps.
  • On top of the stumps are bails which fall off if the ball hits the stumps or wicket.
  • If a player hits the ball far enough, they run and swap places as many times as they can. 
  • They score 1 run every time they manage to swap places and get to the other wicket.

Learn about the famous English sport Tennis

  • The world's most famous tennis tournament is Wimbledon.
  • It started in London in the 19th century.
  • It begins on the nearest Monday to June 22 because this is usually when we have the best weather.
  • Millions of people watch it on TV live. 
  • It is traditional for visitors to eat strawberries and cream whilst they watch the tennis.

Basket Ball and Netball

  • Netball is the largest female team sport in England.
  • The sport is played almost exclusively by women and girls
  • Male participation has increased in recent years.
  • Basketball is a game played between two teams of five players in which goals are scored by throwing a ball through a netted hoop fixed at each end of the court.
  • In basket ball you can move when you have the ball as you pass and shoot.
  • In netball once you have the ball you have to stay still and pass it/shoot.

Build up those core muscles by acting out the boat race in a laundry basket

Choose whether you will push or pull them in the basket.
Can you make it from one side to the other.
Teach the person in the basket how to do a 'rowing action' with their arms.

  • The game of darts, as it is today, was invented in the north of England in a town called Grimsby.
  • The game dates back to the Middle Ages.

Learn about the famous Scottish sport - Golf

 

  • Scotland is traditionally known as the home of golf. 
  • Golfers use hit a ball with a club until it lands in a hole. 
  • They count how many hits it takes to get the ball into the hole. 
  • There are just under 500 golf courses in Scotland alone.
  • The most famous golf club is in a Scottish seaside town called St. Andrews. 

Play Sock Golf

You will need pairs of socks, items to use as 'holes' such as pieces of paper or clothing.

You will need toys to use as targets and a roll of wrapping paper to use as a club (or an alternative item)
