Week 10- Topic

Day

Topic

M

Reading

Read or listen to 'Elmer' with your child.

Talk about 'being different'.

Talk about friendship, (How we need to be friendly to everyone - not just our closest friends)

How does being different sometimes cause some people to be unfair?

Why does the issue of being different impact on our lives?

Comprehension Questions

Why do you think you would never see an elephant like Elmer in a zoo?

Why did Elmer go and look for elephant-coloured berries, and what did he do with them when he found them?

Think of at least two ways that Elmer tried to make the other elephants laugh.

Why do think Elmer was happier at the end of the book than he was at the beginning?

T

Art/Maths

Create new clothes for Elmer.

Try to include some of the 2D shapes you know.

Printable worksheet - https://static.purplemash.com/mashcontent/applications/lessonplans/info/printables_paint_projects_animals_elephant/elephant.pdf

Purple Mash Tool - https://www.purplemash.com/#app/pap/animals/elephant

Explain that Elmer has a tessellating pattern all over his body.

A tessellation is a combination of shapes that fit together perfectly without any gaps, much like a jigsaw puzzle. Brick walls, tiled floors and the honeycomb pattern in bee hives are often good examples of tessellations.

Watch Art Ninja to learn about the famous artist Escher and tessellations

https://www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/watch/art-ninja-escher-painting

Create a tessellating Elmer pattern by repeating a 2D shape without gaps or overlapping.

Top tip - Look at these instructions which will help you know how to make a simpler version.

http://www.thecraftyninja.com/tessellation-kids-project/

Find a square piece of card (cereal boxes cut up are fine)

Make a tile with your child to make a tile and show them how to draw round it without leaving gaps.

Colour or paint the shapes alternating two colours.

W

Reading - Have you read any other books by this author?

Challenge yourself to read 2 you have not read before.

Look at the cover and the title.

What do you think is going to happen in the story?

Who do you think the characters will be? Do you think there will be any extra characters?

Where will the story be set? Why?

After reading ask them to tell you what happened at the beginning, what happened in the middle and what happened at the end.

What's the same about them? (characters? setting? happy ending? author? illustrator? rhyme? )

What's different? (characters? setting? happy ending? author? illustrator? rhyme?)
