Read the story

Listen to the read aloud of 'The Day the Crayons Quit'

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=489micE6eHU

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0NEb7qCWAHg

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUug9I0b820

Questions you could ask

  • Tell me about the book? What is it about?
  • What was the best/worst/saddest/funniest moment in the book?
  • Who was your favourite crayon?
  • How did they feel in the story?
  • How could you tell how they were feeling?
  • Were there any clues hiding in the pictures? Did you spot that some of the words in the letters have been put in capitals so that the reader notices them and knows they must emphasise them or use different expression for those words. e.g. If the crayon is mad, the reader would need to shout those words. If the crayon is trying to explain just how big an elephant is, they might stress the word big . We do this without thinking when we are talking to our friend about something that we found amazing, exciting or surprising.
  • Was there anything they said or did that made you think that? (You might want to revisit this part of the video to help them answer)
  • Which crayon did you feel for the most? Why?
  • This book is full of letters. How can you tell they are letters? How do letters start and end? Do stories start and end like this?
T

English / PSHE

The crayons in the book are fed up and want to quit. The book is full of moans and groans.

Bring your own crayons to life. (pencils and felt tip pens

could be used instead if you do not have crayons)

Optional – add arms and googly eyes for fun.

Write speech bubbles or make little signs out of scraps of paper or sticky notes to show how they feel.

You can print speech bubble templates below.

        Things to think about

What kinds of things do you draw with them?

Do any of them get used more?

Do you have a favourite?

Are there any you use for special pictures?

Are there any you hardly use who might feel left out

Sentence starters you could use

I need…

I want…

I'm sick of ...

I’m…

I’m fed up of…

I don’t want to … anymore.

I feel….

Please stop…

Why do you always…?

W

Drama / Speaking and Listening - Pretend you are one of the moody crayons

Choose one crayon to pretend to be.

Use your crayon character from yesterday if you have it. If you don't you can print a puppet template here for free.

http://craftypammy.com/crazy-crayon-craft/

Make a picture using that colour and fill it with items that are that colour.

e.g For green crayon you might draw...

grass

crocodile

leaves

plants

parrot

brocolli

peas

Christmas trees etc

Act out what the the crayon would say to Duncan or write him a little note. Make sure you give him a long list of the things you have to colour in.

Have fun talking about the items in your picture in your best moany, groany voice. Speaking is the focus today and expression so you do not have to write it down.

However, you could write a list to go with it or write a letter of complaint to Duncan if you want to challenge yourself or develop your writing skills.

Th

English - Pretend you are Duncan

Think again about the crayons in the book or the crayons with the signs you made yesterday.

Things to think about before you write

Think of a crayon and how they were feeling?

What problem were they having?

Why did they want to quit?

How could Duncan make it right again?

Task

Write your own version of the story called ‘The Day the Crayons Were Happy' using the template provided. Pretend you are Duncan and you are writing to tell each crayon what you are going to do to help them so that they don't quit.

Examples

Dear yellow crayon,

You can share the job of colouring sunshine with orange crayon.

Love from

Duncan.

Dear blue crayon,

I am sending you on a nice holiday to my playhouse where you can relax. You don’t have to colour oceans or skies.

Love from Duncan.

How much should I write?

Your child might make a single page about their chosen crayon or might choose to write an extended piece with a different crayon on each page. Once they have got an idea of what to put in the first letter, the other pages can follow the same structure.

What do I need?

All you need is paper and a pencil.

If you would find a template useful to know how to set it out or you have the facility to print you can download them here.

F

Art Challenge

Can you make a picture that keeps all of the crayons happy?

Read the information from Red and think about what you can colour or draw.

Then read what Purple has to say and add that to the picture.

The Day the Crayons Quit Challenge

  • Red- Give Red a break. Don’t use it very much and you may not use it for fire trucks, Santa, strawberries, apples, or hearts!

  • Purple- Purple insists that you have GOOD CRAFTSMANSHIP, so try to make your colouring as nice and neat as possible.

  • Beige- Help beige feel better about himself. Use Beige to make at least one of these items: bear, pony, or puppy.

  • Grey - Poor Grey is tired so use him to make something small like a penguin or rock. For an added challenge you need to pick a rhino, whale, hippo, or elephant and colour it with something other than Grey.

  • White -Help white feel good about himself. Don’t leave any unimportant White space. That means your ENTIRE paper needs to be colored in and it can only be White if it is something that is supposed to be White.

  • Black- Black does not want to be used for any outlines. Use Black to draw a couple objects that are coloured in with Black.

  • Green- Green loves colouring crocodiles, trees, dinosaurs and frogs, so pick at least two of these things to add to your drawing.

  • Orange and Yellow- Orange and Yellow can’t agree who is the colour of the sun so use BOTH equally to create a sunset in your drawing.

  • Blue- Stubby little blue needs a break. So don’t use him to colour oceans, lakes, rivers, raindrops, rainclouds, or the clear sky.

  • Pink - Pink wants to be used to colour a dinosaur, monster, or cowboy so be sure to include one in your drawing.

  • Peach- Peach is so embarrassed that he doesn’t want to come out of the crayon box, so sorry NO Peach in your drawing.

Example solution - There are many ways to solve this so there is no need to copy all of the objects in it.
