Reading

Watch/Listen to The Crayons' Christmas. above.

Ask the following questions

Who are the characters?

What started at the beginning, middle or end?

What was your favourite part? Why?

Does this book remind you of anything you have experienced? (Christmas/ other celebrations)

How is the book similar to our book last week?

- same author

- same illustration style /illustrator

- it has the same characters

- has feelings in

- both are stories.

How is the book different to our book last week?

- Instead of letters there are different Christmas items.

- There are pictures of the envelopes.

- You can open the envelopes yourself and discover what is inside.

- There are a few new characters such as Chunky toddler crayon.

- The letters are from Mum and Dad not the crayons in this book.

English - Learn how to write an address

Gathering Envelopes.

Gather blank envelopes to write on.

If you do not have envelopes create a simple pocket from a sheet of A4 paper. Here are some methods you could use and step by step videos.

Not all of them require tape or glue if you do not have these resources.

Resource 1 click here

Resource 2 click here

Resource 3 click here

Resource 4 click here

Alternatively, save old envelopes and stick a rectangle of plain paper on the front so your child can write on them themselves.

Capital Letters and Writing Addresses

Explore any post you have received together.

Look at the front and the back of the envelope.

Can you read any familiar words on there using your phonics?

What do they mean? Who is the letter addressed to?

Ask you child if they know who delivers the post?

How does the postman know where to deliver the letter?

Write your address. Talk about each line of it and which words need capital letters and why (Capital letters are used for names  - names of people, places streets, towns, cities, countries, counties)

Discuss the postcode and any capital letters?

Look at the envelope in the story and the address on there. How is it the same or different to your own address.

Create a fun, imaginary address for where your crayons are kept.

W

Art /DT - Design a new outfit for peach crayon

In the story peach crayon didn't have any clothes so Mum and Dad sent him some clothes.

Why not have a go at designing some clothes of your own.

First choose a purpose for your new outfit - will it be for a certain season or a celebration.

Next choose an audience - will it be for a brother or sister, a doll or figure or one of the crayons.

Then choose how you would like to make them (see below). Note - some take more time than others.

Option 1 - Have fun making big paper clothes for a sibling from newspaper or wrapping paper and tape.

Option 2 - Design an outfit using Purple Mash (Search for 'Clothes', 'Cinderella's dress', 'Special Clothes', 'Summer Clothes' or 'T-shirt'

Option 3 - Design small paper clothes for a doll or action figure

Option 4 - Make clothes for a crayon by colouring in this template and sticking the pieces together.

If you would like to view or print a template click on the picture below.

Option 5 - Make a crayon and draw or stick clothing on using an old kitchen roll tube.

Find out how to do this by clicking the link.

RE - Judaism (Hannukah)

Revisit the story for this week. Can you pause it on the page about Hanukkah?

There is also mention of the dreidel game.

Find out about this celebration. using the animated story here

Or use the following website  - https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/35030671

Discussion points

Can you think of a place that is really special to you?.

How would you feel if that place was spoiled or ruined?

What is a Hanukiah and how many candles does it have?

Why does it have that many candles?

What is a dreidel?

What do you do with one?

Make a Hanukiah or a card with one on the front just like in the book

You could draw one or make one. You could use cardboard tubes, hand prints or collage to do this.

  • Get them to make a list of things they will need? (banners, balloons etc...)
  • Create a list of all of the celebration days they can recall and write a sentence about what they remember about each.
  • Invent a story involving a celebration. They could write it out or make a story map. Encourage your child to use story language.

Make decorations for a celebration

  • Make decorations for a celebration or party.
  • Create a birthday card for the next family member’s birthday. What will they put on the front? Will it be pictures or will they write a birthday poem? Can they use different materials to design their celebration card?

Celebratory food/drink

  • Make hot cocoa/ hot chocolate of your own.  If you are not try cold cocoa or milkshake recipes.
  • Design your ultimate celebration cake on paper.
  • Write a menu for a special celebration. It could be Christmas dinner or a Diwali feast.
  • Make 'mock tails' with leftover juice, pop or squash.
  • Make sandwiches for an afternoon tea, or decorate/ice biscuits together.
  • Bake a cake: Weigh out the ingredients and bake a cake for a celebration. Write instructions to tell us what you did and send us a photo for the website.

Find out when celebrations happen over the year

  • On a calendar (here is an online calendar if needed) go through and write down when different family members birthdays are or when special events are happening in your family. Can they think of a celebration for each month they may have with their family? Find out when it’s people's birthdays or anniversaries. Which month has the most celebrations?
  • Research some of the celebrations we have around the world.  Which season do they happen in?

Autumn: Diwali, Bonfire Night, Harvest Festival , Hanukkah

Winter: Christmas, New Year

Spring: Holi, Easter, Mother’s day

Summer: Father’s day, EID, Vesak

Make a map

https://researchparent.com/wp-content/uploads/Generic_Board_Game_Research_Parent.pdf

https://www.auntannie.com/GamesToMake/RaceGame/

Don't forget to write on some of the places you could land to make it more fun.

This is a good way to get a small amount of writing in too. Write consequences on the track.

This is a good opportunity to work on your child's number formation. Number each space in the corner.

Words you might need - miss a go, go forward ___ spaces,  go back ___ spaces.

Decorate the rest of the paper with pictures of your choice.

You could write rules or instructions to go with your game.

Read other books about celebrations

  • Find a book where you can see the characters celebrating. Is it a birthday? Can you read the book to someone over the phone?
  • Read the story Kipper’s Birthday. Discuss how it may be similar or the same to your birthday celebration.
