For each clue draw 4 different images. 1  image  out of the 4 images you have drawn should match that part of the story. All your child needs is a piece of paper to record their answers on. Set it out like this so they can copy the symbol they think on the lines.

Day 5 - The Highway Rat

The Highway Rat

Questions you could ask about this book

Before reading find our what your child think will happen in this story.

Look at the cover, the illustrations and the title. Do they give any clues away?

They maybe unsure what a highway is and this may be a good point to talk about highwaymen – or you could do so later after enjoying the story together.

Read the story as far as the lines about the animals growing thinner and thinner. How does your child think the animals feel? Is there anything the animals can do?

Continue reading to the end of the story.

Point out the repeated parts and join in together with these parts as you finish the book.

Talk about the book

  • What does your child think about the way the duck tricked the rat?

  • Are children puzzled by anything? For example the meaning of words or phrases such as ‘stand and deliver’ or ‘halt’.

  • What does your child know about highwaymen?

  • Do children know any more stories like this?

  • Is it like any of the other books they have read over the week?

  • How is it different to the other books they have read?

The Highway Rat's manners were 'rough and rude'. Can you make a list of good manners to help the Highway Rat be nicer to others?

Art

Make a cave painting. Use A4 paper, a regular pencil and a teabag to stain the paper when you have finished. If you have chalks or wax crayons brown, black and white crayons work really well because they are natural colours. No paint brushes are required, just use the teabag as the brush, moving it around the paper until it has been covered.

.You could create cave Art in the garden too with mud and sticks.
